PISA Champions: Why Singapore Students are No.1 in the world

written by The Schooling Society

Singapore students excel in critical thinking

In 2016, a random sample of 5,000 students in Singapore topped the global PISA scores for English, Mathematics and Science.  The 3 yearly PISA tests are designed by OECD. More than 60 countries around the world participate in the study.  15 year olds across the globe are tested to gauge how well they apply their knowledge to solve problems. In other words, PISA tests students on their critical thinking skills.

Fish Porridge 101

Is fish good for our brains?

In May 2018, a study published in Neurology revealed that a diet rich in  fish, fruits, nuts, whole grains and vegetables may increase the total brain volume. Researchers at the Erasmus University Medical Centre of Netherlands had studied 4,000 people over a ten year period. They noticed that the brain area responsible for the processing of memories, the hippocampus, was larger in people who had healthier diets.

In Asia, fish is most commonly steamed or deep fried. For children, fresh fish fillet is often used to make fish porridge. Cooked rice is poached in a hearty chicken stock before slices of fish are added in, just before being served hot. A staple at many homes, this dish is simple to prepare, healthy and delicious.

One way to subtly influence them is to start off by cooking dishes that have both meat and vegetables in them. Thai style minced pork with thai basil is a popular staple in Thailand but in this version, we added in long beans and choy poh, ingredients that appear in the Chinese version of this dish.

Is There A Link Between Processed Foods And Cancer?

written by The Schooling Society

In February 2018, a French report was released. In this study, 105,000 middle-aged individuals’ diet and health were monitored over a 5 year period. The report found that a 10 percent rise in the consumption of ultra-processed foods lead to a 12 percent increase in cancer risk. While not scientifically conclusive, it suggests  that our diet influences the probability of getting cancer. So, what does this mean for us? What exactly are ultra-processed foods?

The Lessons My Dog Taught Me

written by The Schooling Society

Ginger, our Cavoodle, arrived at our home in 2012. She was only 2 months old; tiny and very quiet. She had just flown in straight from a Melbourne farm. We only realised later that she was born on 8th August that year, an auspicious double 8 date for the Chinese. Just as we have tried to bring her up as best as we can,  this little dog has taught us some lessons herself.

Chicken Curry 101

written by The Schooling Society

Introducing ‘adult’ dishes to children

Not many children eat spicy food. A likely reason for this is that they have not been exposed to such foods from a young age. There are two good reasons to start them early. Firstly, ingredients such as turmeric, chilli, garlic and ginger are known for their health benefits. Secondly, having children join adults for a curry dinner just makes eating together more convenient and enjoyable.
